International Admissions

At TJ, we welcome curious, motivated students from around the world.

Families considering an American boarding school are often thinking about more than academics. They are thinking about transition: from their home country's education system to discussion-based learning, from strong performance to confident participation, from local success to global readiness.

At Thomas Jefferson School, that transition is intentional. Our small, discussion-based program ensures that every student participates, is known well by their teachers, and is guided closely as they grow. Over time, students develop the confidence to speak, the discipline to think clearly, and the independence to succeed in a U.S. or U.K. university setting.

For international families

Many of our students come from educational systems that emphasize exams, accuracy, and individual performance.

At TJ, students learn in a different way. Classes are discussion-based, and participation is expected. This is not assumed. It is taught.

Students are guided step by step into speaking, writing, and engaging with ideas. Over time, they become more confident, more independent, and more comfortable expressing their thinking in English.

Frquently Asked Questions

List of 10 items.

  • What makes a small U.S. boarding school better for international students?

Small boarding schools offer something larger schools cannot: visibility. In classes of 8–12 students, every student is expected to speak, participate, and think out loud. This builds confidence quickly, especially for international students adjusting to discussion-based learning. At TJ, teachers know each student personally and guide them daily, both in class and in boarding life.
  • How do U.S. boarding schools help international students improve English speaking confidence?

Improvement comes from structure, not exposure alone. At TJ, students practice English every day through discussion-based classes and a program called Outside Reading, where they read and write regularly with faculty feedback. Over time, this builds fluency, clarity, and confidence in both speaking and writing.
  • Will my child struggle in a U.S. discussion-based classroom?

The transition can be challenging at first, especially for students from exam-focused systems. At TJ, participation is taught step by step. Small classes ensure no student can disappear, and teachers actively guide students into discussion, helping them build confidence gradually rather than expecting immediate fluency.
  • How do U.S. boarding schools prepare students for top universities?

Preparation is continuous, not just in senior year. At TJ, students build skills year by year: analytical reading, structured writing, and independent thinking. College counseling is highly individualized, and teachers write detailed recommendations because they know each student well. This combination is what universities trust.
  • What are the university outcomes for students at Thomas Jefferson School?

TJ students consistently earn admission to strong U.S. universities, with 100% attending four-year colleges. Many receive significant merit scholarships, averaging around $480,000 per student in recent years, reflecting both academic preparation and strong application support.
  • How is boarding life structured for international students at TJ?

Boarding life at TJ is designed to build independence, not rely on strict routines. Students live in a small residential community where they are known well and supported by resident advisors, a nurse, and a counselor.

Boarding and local American day students are intentionally integrated, sharing dorm spaces and daily life, so students build real friendships across the full community.

Because of the school’s size, students are guided closely but also expected to manage their time and take responsibility. This balance helps international students adjust confidently while preparing for the independence of university life.
  • Is studying in the U.S. still a good investment for international families?

Families are asking this question more carefully today. The value of a U.S. boarding school lies in how students are prepared, not just where they enroll.

At TJ, students build the habits universities expect: close reading, analytical writing, and active participation in discussion. Through daily practice and close faculty guidance, they learn to think independently, communicate clearly, and adapt to new environments.

These are the skills that translate into strong university outcomes and long-term success, and they remain difficult to replicate in exam-based systems.
  • How does TJ compare to larger boarding schools?

Larger schools offer scale and resources. TJ offers depth and personalization. In a small environment, students cannot be overlooked. They build closer relationships with teachers, receive more detailed feedback, and develop stronger academic voices. For many students, this leads to better long-term outcomes.
  • What kind of student succeeds at Thomas Jefferson School?

TJ is best suited for students who are curious, motivated, and ready to engage actively in learning. These are students who benefit from discussion, enjoy thinking deeply, and want to be part of a close academic community where ideas matter and participation is expected.
  • How early should international families apply to U.S. boarding schools?

Families are applying earlier and taking more time to compare options. Given visa timelines, school interviews, and financial planning, it is best to begin exploring schools at least 12–18 months before enrollment. Early conversations also allow schools to guide families through fit, academics, and transition planning.
