Social Studies

The Social Studies Department strives to give students a critical understanding of history, geography, economics, politics, and social institutions, as well as the skills necessary for participatory citizenship in a democratic society. The faculty pursues these educational goals with an interdisciplinary approach and a commitment to student participation in a seminar format.
All Social Studies courses emphasize the development of study skills that are important to students both as they think historically and relate to the world around them. Students engage with both primary and secondary sources, and analyze data; they write analytically, and through all of this work build global awareness. Media other than print—films, art, music, political cartoons, etc.—are used to broaden and deepen students' understanding of their course of study and sharpen their analytical skills.
