Standardized Testing

Standardized Testing

Students at Thomas Jefferson take the PSAT in grades 9, 10, and 11.

Standardized Testing

In the middle of Junior year, each student meets with the college counselor individually to create a personalized testing plan and to discuss test prep options. Students are also directed to ACT testing resources.

As standardized testing plans are individual and the scores belong solely to the student, students are responsible for registering for all standardized tests and for sending official test scores from testing agencies to universities that require them.  The College Counseling office is available to assist students with registration and to guide them on when and how to send their scores.

Testing with Accommodations

Students may qualify for accommodation on standardized tests, including extra time, breaks, and additional supports. If a student believes they may qualify, they should consult with Associate Head of School, Jane Roth (jroth@tjs.org).

Test Optional Colleges

Many schools are moving away from requiring standardized test scores. While the decision of whether to report standardized test scores is specific to each student and program, there are more resources available to support test-optional application processes.

FairTest.org is an organization that “works to end the misuses and flaws of standardized testing and to ensure that evaluation of students, teachers, and schools is fair, open, valid, and educationally beneficial.” You can find a searchable list of schools that either deemphasize testing or do not use it at all in admissions decisions on their website.
