Ready to see whether TJ could be your school? Start by spending some time with us.
Start by getting to know TJ.
The best way to understand TJ is to experience the people, classes, and daily life that make the school distinctive. If you live nearby, a Shadow Day gives you the chance to join classes, meet students and teachers, and spend part of the day on campus.
If visiting in person is not practical, we can get to know one another another way. Boarding applicants from farther away can meet with us by Zoom, explore campus virtually, and talk with members of the TJ community before deciding whether a visit makes sense.
Either way, the goal is the same: to help you picture yourself at TJ and to give us the chance to learn more about you.

Frequently Asked Questions
| Do I have to visit campus before I can be admitted? |
We do need to meet every student before making an admission decision, but that meeting does not have to happen on campus. Students who live nearby can spend a Shadow Day at TJ, while students who live farther away can meet with us virtually. Either way, we want the chance to get to know you beyond your application and give you the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about TJ.
We also meet separately with parents or guardians. That conversation gives families time to tell us more about their child, learn about the school, and ask the questions that matter to them. |
| What is TJ looking for in an applicant? |
There is no single type of TJ student. We look for students who are ready to engage seriously with their learning and who are curious enough to ask questions, listen to other ideas, and contribute to a small school community. Grades and testing help us understand academic preparation, but recommendations, writing, and our conversations with students matter too. |
| Is the SSAT required? |
The SSAT is our standard admission test, but it may not be necessary if a student already has recent standardized testing, such as MAP scores, that gives us the academic information we need. If you have other test results available, send them to our Admissions team and we can let you know whether the SSAT can be waived. |
| Can students apply to grades other than Grade 9? |
Yes. TJ enrolls students in grades 7–12, and openings may be available in several grades each year. Space varies by grade and by day or boarding program, so families considering a transfer are encouraged to contact Admissions about current availability. |
| What are the residential options for boarding students? |
Students whose families live in the United States may apply as five-day or seven-day boarding students. Five-day boarders live on campus during the school week and typically return home on weekends. Seven-day boarders remain on campus through the weekend and take part in residential activities and outings. |
| Does applying for financial aid affect admission? |
No. Admission and financial aid are separate processes reviewed by different committees. Families who need financial aid should apply for it at the same time they apply for admission. Admission and financial aid decisions are shared together so families can consider the full financial picture before making an enrollment decision. |
| What if we miss the published application deadline? |
Contact us. After the priority admission dates, we may continue to consider applications when space remains. Availability can differ by grade and by day or boarding program, so the Admissions team can let you know what options are still available. |
