Zyaire Jones awarded full four-year scholarship through QuestBridge

TJ is thrilled to announce that Zyaire Jones has received a full four-year scholarship to Pomona College through the 2021 QuestBridge National College Match!

QuestBridge is a national program that connects high-achieving high school seniors from low-income backgrounds with full four-year scholarships to top colleges. Out of over 16,500 applicants, 1,674 Finalists were recognized as Match Scholarship Recipients matching with QuestBridge’s 45 college partners. Zyaire will attend Pomona next fall with a scholarship worth over $200,000.

“The achievements of our Match Scholarship Recipients are a culmination of their hard work and perseverance,” said Ana McCullough, Co-Founder and CEO of QuestBridge. “Thanks to the commitment of our college partners, these deserving students can tap into their full potential without worrying about the cost of a great education.”

Zyaire is among a group of outstanding high school seniors who have an average unweighted GPA of 3.93, and 92% of the group are in the top 10 percent of their graduating class. Financially, 95% come from a household with an annual income under $65,000. The majority of these new QuestBridge Scholars — 81% — are among the first generation in their families to attend a four-year college in the United States.

“I call this ‘Zyaire and the quest for the Holy Grail,’ a fully-funded education at the college of their choice. And they did it! This is such a testament to Zyaire’s immense talent and the care and determination they bring to everything they do,” commented Eric Steere, TJ’s Director of College Counseling. “At Pomona, I can’t think of a better venue for an artist and social scientist, like Zyaire, to continue learning and exploring, and I’m excited to see what the future holds for this remarkable individual.”

Since entering TJ in eighth grade, Zyaire has thrived under the school's rigorous academic program and supportive boarding community. They have attended TJ thanks to the generous support from the Acworth Foundation, which aims “not only to help individuals but also to enhance the educational environment [of the recipients] and ultimately society as a whole.” Over TJ’s history, 100 percent of its graduates have been admitted to a wide variety of colleges and universities throughout the U.S. and abroad, and many have continued their education in graduate or professional schools.

When Zyaire arrives at Pomona College next fall, they will join the QuestBridge Scholars Network, which provides ongoing support and resources through nationwide opportunities and campus communities. The QuestBridge Scholars Network and its Alumni Association now include over 20,000 current college students and graduates worldwide.
