Campus Safety

Campus safety is best achieved through preparation and practice. We stay current with the ever-changing safety environment through various professional affiliations.
We then implement what we learn by continuously updating our processes and procedures. We then test or practice the process, review the outcome of the test and revise the process/procedure as necessary. Our guiding principle is simple: Practice makes perfect and safety is everyone’s responsibility.
All of our faculty and staff are trained in CPR and first aid. We have a registered nurse on staff who oversees all matters related to student health. We have an established relationship with a local pediatrician, urgent care and medical facilities. The St. Louis area is blessed with an excellent medical community, which gives us ready access to a number of high-quality urgent care and hospital facilities.

List of 4 items.

  • Emergency Preparedness: Practiced Regularly

TJ’s emergency operation plan is customized to meet the needs of our school community and geographic location.  Assigned roles and responsibilities for adults and students, with appropriate orientation, training, and follow-up, are an integral part of the plan. Whether we are assessing a weather-related issue or identifying and understanding other possible threats or hazards, we follow established procedures and guidelines of federal, state, and local agencies.

Students participate in drills for natural and man-made disasters; emergency contacts for all adults and students are continuously updated.  TJ is fortunate to have police and fire protection, and ambulance service within a short distance of campus. They respond quickly to any call, and automatically come when the fire alarms sound.
  • Communications: Every Way Possible

Depending on the situtation, notifications to the members of our school community may involve any or all of the following methods:
    • email
    • telephone
    • voice mail
    • text message
    • social media (facebook)
    • local television stations (for closings or late starts due to inclement weather)
  • Supervision and Accountability: Communicated in our Community Handbook

Each year, all students, parents, and staff members receive an updated copy of our Community Handbook. This publication includes policies and procedures related to personal safety and security.

Dorm room safety and fire hazards, campus facility use, and absence protocols are some of the topics you can find in the handbook.

All TJ employees undergo a criminal background check. We also require background checks for other adults who work with our students on campus (private music teachers, tutors, etc.).
  • Personal Possessions: Governed by our Honor Code

Our small community is built on a strong foundation of trust, represented by the TJ Honor Code. Nevertheless, we want our students to appreciate the importance of caring for and securing their belongings. Dorm rooms are always locked and are accessible only by those with an assigned code.
