OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES FOR 2005-2006


The following list is an overview of many of the additional activities available during this school year. These events are not covered by the Student Activities Fee. Other events may be added at a later date. The costs below are approximate (they may change according to seat availablity and a group-rate discount) and are deducted from student accounts at the time of sign-up. JAKE SHIMABUKURO AND STEPHEN BENNETT
Date and time: Saturday, September 24, 8:00 p.m. at the Sheldon Concert Hall
Description: The Sheldon hosts a jam session with some of the most amazing pickers you'll ever see. Hawaiian Jake Shimabukuro, a ukele virtuoso who has been compared to Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen, is joined by guitarist Stephen Bennett, a National Flatpicking Champion.

CARDINALS BASEBALL GAME
Date and time: Friday, September 30, 7:10 p.m. at Busch Stadium
Description: The Cards battle the Cincinnati Reds! [Another game will be scheduled in the spring when we know the Cardinals 2006 schedule.]

DIAVOLO
Date and time: Friday, October 28, 8:00 p.m. at The Edison Theatre
Description: Extreme sports meets dance. Diavolo's physicality is awe inspiring, leaping, flying, spinning, and dancing on a variety of larger-than-life structures. Diavolo pushes the boundaries of human form and mind with fearless athleticism. (A great way to unwind after first-quarter exams!)

FILM FEST
Date and time: Friday, November 4, 7:00 p.m. at TJ
Description: Spend an evening watching your favorite movies with friends while filling up on popcorn and soda.

RADIANCE
Date and time: Sunday, November 6, 3:00 p.m. at the Powell Hall
Description: These pieces glow with inner light. Mozart's overture takes its radiance from the opera it introduces, which tells a tale of good triumphing over evil. Mahler's music glows with the deepest possible acceptance of everything profound in life.

COMPLETELY HOLLYWOOD (ABRIDGED)
Date and time: Sunday, November 13, 2:00 p.m. at The Rep's Studio Theatre
Description: The Reduced Shakespeare Company makes a hilarious, no-holds-barred assault ion the movies.

NOCHE FLAMENCA
Date and time: Sunday, November 20, 2:00 p.m. at The Edison Theatre
Description: Passion ignites when this company takes the stage. Artistic Director Martin Santangelo and his wife, Soledad Barrio, lend their vitality, energy, and arresting devotion to this mysterious and complex art form.

SERIOUS SPLENDOR
Date and time: Friday, December 2, 10:00 a.m. at the Powell Hall
Description: This concert starts with Richard Strauss, who makes the orchestra sound both glorious and intimate. Then comes sobriety, with Beethoven's concerto, though Beethoven too can seduce you with sound. Revueltas might not be a name you know, butbut you won't forget him; he transmutes the culture of his native Mexico into a very special kind of orchestral glory.

WICKED
Date and time: Sunday, December 4, 2:00 p.m. at the Fox Theatre
Description: Long before that girl from Kansas arrives in Munchkinland, two girls meet in the land of Oz. One -- born with emerald-green skin is smart, fiery, and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious, and very popular. How these two grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and the Glinda the Good Witch makes for the most spellbinding new musical in years

MARCUS ROBERTS TRIO
Date and time: Saturday, January 28, 8:00 p.m. at the Sheldon Concert Hall
Description: The stomps, grooves, and blues roots of the New Orleans sound meet agile, sophisticated, Harlem-style jazz in a performance by one of the pre-eminent jazz pianists of our time. Along with bassist Roland Guerin and drummer Jason Marsalis, Roberts explores the music of everyone from Scott Joplin to Duke Ellington.

HIGH ROPES
Date and time: Saturday, April 15, time to be announced at The Wyman Center
Description: This high-ropes course includes "the leap of faith." Take a flying trapeze over the chasm. Don't worry -- a rope will catch you if you fall!

SUPER FUN GAME AND KARAOKE NIGHT

Description: From Boggle to Monopoly, from Grease to the Beatles, come and join in a free evening of games and song.

LILA DOWNS
Date and time: Sunday, May 7, 7:30 p.m. at the Sheldon Concert Hall
Description: Drawing from her Mexican-Indian roots in the Sierra Madre mountains of southern Mexico, Lila performs with a Brazilian guitarist, a Cuban bassist, a Chilean drummer, a Mexican harpist, and a sax player from New Jersey to create music that is powerful and magical.
