Application Process for International Students

Apply to TJ with SSAT’s Standard Application Online (SAO). For international applicants, TJ's application fee is $150. SSAT accepts both Visa and Mastercard.

After setting up an account with SSAT, the application will prompt you to complete multiple parts:

  • Part 1: Student/Family Information
  • Part 2: Student Questionnaire
  • Part 3: Parent Statement
We strongly recommend completing Parts 1-3 of the application prior to scheduling your Skype Family Meeting.

The application portal allows you to access, send and upload the completed supplemental required documentation:

  • Math Teacher Recommendation Form
  • English Teacher Recommendation Form
  • Principal Recommendation Form
  • Academic Records/Transcripts
All supplemental required documentation listed above must be translated.

SSAT (required for international applicants to grades 7-12)

Thomas Jefferson School's Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) code is 7660.

The SSAT is given all over the world on at least eight test dates. Visit the SSAT website to find a testing site in your area.

The SSAT consists of verbal, quantitative (math), and reading comprehension sections. The verbal questions test your vocabulary, verbal reasoning, and ability to relate ideas logically. The quantitative (math) questions test your ability to solve problems involving arithmetic, elementary algebra and geometry and concepts. The reading comprehension section tests your ability to understand what you read. All tests are printed in English. In addition, the test includes a writing sample portion, which asks you to respond to a topic statement. The essay is not graded, but a copy accompanies your SSAT score report.

TOEFL (required for international applicants to grades 9-12)

The TOEFL test must have been administered within the past six months (We do not accept the SLEP or the TOEFL Junior Standard). Thomas Jefferson School's TOEFL institution code is 7422.  TJ does not have a required minimum score for the TOEFL, but can report than the average score of admitted students is 100+.

Vericant Interview (required for Chinese applicants)

Vericant is a trusted, third party English language assessment company. TJ has partnered with Vericant to help determine English language mastery. Vericant has interview sites in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.  To learn more about Vericant and to schedule an interview, please click here

Skype Interview (required for all international applicants)

Many international applicants are unable to travel to St. Louis to visit Thomas Jefferson during the application process. In lieu of a visit to TJ, please contact the admissions office to schedule your Skype meeting. Skype meetings will only be conducted after an admissions application has been received. Typically, Skype interviews will be conducted between the hours of 7:30am and 5:00pm CST/CDT. TJ's Skype name is tjadmissions_stl.

Visit TJ

If you are able to visit TJ during the admissions process, we would love to meet you! Please schedule your visit to campus with advance notice to ensure the admissions office can plan accordingly. An international applicant and their family would likely spend a whole day at TJ-- touring, sitting in on classes and completing the interview requirements.

International students who are not U.S. citizens must send a statement accepting financial responsibility for all of the student’s tuition, personal expenses, and travel/vacation costs. The family should also attach an official document from the family’s bank or financial institution indicating that the funds are available. For the 2017-18 school year, tuition and fees are as follows:

  • International 7-day Boarding Student Tuition - $50,950
  • International 7-day Boarding Student Activity Fee - $2,175
  • International 7-day Boarding Student Health Insurance - $1,200
  • International 7-day Boarding Student Books - $300-$500

The tuition and fees listed above to not include travel expenses, spending money, dorm decorations or supplies, Advanced Placement examination fees, SAT examination fees, college application fees, and an TJ Annual Fund donation.

Students are issued an I-20 after they have been admitted (successful completion of the admissions application, and in receipt of an offer of admission), and have enrolled (signed the enrollment contract, and submitted the tuition deposit). After a student has enrolled, the DSO will issue and I-20 form.

Once you receive the I-20 form from TJ, it is then your responsibility to pay the I-90 Sevis fee and apply for a F-1 student visa. To learn about the interview process and what documents you need to obtain your F-1 visa, please contact your local U.S. Consulate. A list of U.S. Consulates can be found here.
